Where is it?
El Yunque is surrounded by cities that are growing at rates between 8-36% a year. Cities expand because the population grows and there is is need for more space. This means the population growth rate is high enough to require the expansion of the city. As population growth increases, the amount of energy needed to sustain the human population also increases. This will result in deforestation in order to build fields, or in the modern day, airports to enable the arrival of imports.
What effects will this have?
Pollution will increase. The main source of energy these days is burning fossil fuels. This will increase the amount of air pollution. The amount of water pollution will also increase because of human fecal matter, litter, and industrial pollutants. This will eventually lead to the decay of the ecosystem because species that rely on river water will eventually die from poisoning from foreign chemicals. See Pollution
Cities need room to expand. On an island like Puerto Rico, cities have expanded historically by deforesting and building. At the current rates, what is left of the unprotected forest will be removed and destroyed.
