Students will go and plant trees throughout Puerto Rico to attempt to restore the forest cover to historic levels. Much of the forest of El Yunque has been destroyed by urban development. This will provide more of a habitat to endangered species, and restore the forest cover of El Yunque.
Degradation reduced habitats for endangered species, lowers species diversity, and creates crowded situations. Over the past 12 years, annual city growth has been anywhere between 8% to 36%. As people cut down trees, the forest looses stability, and directly puts animal life in danger.
When students plant trees, they will replace those that were cut down. Afterwards, they will hike, swim, and relax under a waterfall in the forest before returning to their hotel for the night.
