Students will leave on the Friday before February break. They will have an orientation in New York City on the major issues they are expected to analyze. They will spread awareness of water pollution, and land development and degradation. They will do this by going to Rio Grande and having conversations with Puerto Ricans, to develop an understanding of Puerto Rican culture, Puerto Rican customs to mainlanders, and to “casually” interest Puerto Ricans to the water issues that plague their island. Students will also solicit donations from Puerto Ricans to provide as incentives for lawmakers to listen to plans to protect the environment and replant the forest for meetings on the final day.
Psychologically speaking, this will generate interest concerning the water problems, and that industrial and other types of water pollution could massively affect humans as well as harming the rainforest.
After doing this in Rio Grande, students will take a trip to San Juan and repeat their previous actions in Rio Grande, having a self-guided beautiful tour of San Juan.
